Just as the world of email authentication stood on the brink of chaos, it appears that a reconciliation among the various players is once again at hand. Last week, Microsoft announced that they had changed their patents and submission to the IETF. It just so happens that these changes address some of the concerns that previously caused the IETF and AOL to walk away from a joint standard. With Microsoft playing nicer with its patents, AOL once again announced its support for Microsoft's Sender ID and the world is now back on track toward a single authentication standard. This is a good thing as all of America is tired of the 24/7 coverage of this highly contentious issue over the last few weeks (oops, sorry, that was the presidential election, not Sender ID).
