AOL Giving Away Spammer's Hummer, Gold, Cash

As a thank-you to members for pushing the "Report Spam" button to help it track down spammers, and to send a message that spam doesn't pay, AOL is inviting folks to take part in its latest "Spammer's Gold Sweepstakes."

From Aug. 10-19, AOL members and non-members alike can sign up for a chance to win a fully-loaded 2003 Hummer H2 and a share of nearly $100,000 worth of gold bars and cash seized under CAN-SPAM from New-Hampshire spammer Brad Bournival.

A colleague reminded me that, when AOL ran a similar sweepstakes last year to give away a 2002 Porsche Boxter confiscated from a spammer, there was some confusion among members who thought they could enter the contest by clicking the "Report Spam" button while viewing an email. While that was not the case then, or now, it might be a good idea to keep an eye on your AOL complaint volume for spikes until the promotion ends.
